Start Small (Pick One Room)
Some people think they should start with the whole house in all rooms. Instead, it would be wise to start with one mess at a time. One room at a time.
Trying to do it all at the same time just leads to frustration and a larger mess. Instead, start with one drawer. Clean it out. Take out the items you no longer use. Move on to the next drawer. Do the same thing.Continue until a room is complete. Once every drawer is complete and you have trash bags packed up – move on to the next one.
The Clothing Declutter Test
Reorganize your closet. Once every item in your closet has been reorganized, keep all hangers one way. When you wear an item of clothing turn the hanger the other way and put that same article of clothing back on the hanger.
After 3 months, if you have not worn some items of clothing (assuming they are in season) it may be time to remove them from your closet permanently.
Declutter By Re-Gifting
If you have presents that have never been opened, but you keep them because they are a “gift”, it’s time to remove them from your home. If you don’t like the idea of re-gifting a gift try selling it on Kijiji or Craigslist.
